I kind of disappeared there for a while (like, you know, 6 months). Anyway, let's just agree that blogging is hard and move on, ok?<br />
<br />
So what have I been up to? In real life news, I finally got myself a job back in December (meaning I was unemployed for a crappy 3 months). Really, that's about the only thing I have to report about my life outside the sewing room.<br />
<br />
And I have actually been sewing and a have a small backlog of things to blog. Plus I fell down a bit of a cosplay rabbit hole, so I have a costume completed as well. And I'm currently working on a Lady Skater dress ('bout time).<br />
<br />
So the next step is to get my butt in gear and get some photos of my backlog of projects. Fingers crossed it doesn't take another 6 months!Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04383312222183625531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-30051188296172728612014-11-28T10:21:00.000-08:002014-11-28T10:21:35.476-08:00Making Decisions... wanna help?Ok, here's the thing. I've recently gotten really interesting in historical clothing. Not for the first time, but anyway, my intense love of Victorian fashion is once again rearing up. I want to talk about it. Which, for me, means I want to blog about it. And not just Victorian. I've found a Regency ball talking place 3 hours from me at the end of February that I would love to attend (I'm on the waiting list, since it's sold out). I'm interesting in pretty much everything from Rococo to the Swinging Sixties.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So what's the problem? Well, I'm still going to be making modern clothes for day-to-day wear. So basically, my sewing is going to be a mish-mash of modern and historical in the foreseeable future and that's where I'm a bit stuck. Do I keep everything all on one blog, posting a modern skater dress one week, then rambling on about corsets and petticoats the next? I'm worried if I do this, modern sewers who might read my blog will be bored to tears by the historical stuff and historical sewers will just skip it because, well, boring modern stuff. Should I even care? Not many people honestly read this blog, so should I just say screw it and talk about what I want, went I want? Or should I leave this blog for modern stuff and start a second blog for everything historical? This would keep everything nice and separate (which would make me happy too). However, that's 2 blogs to manage instead of one and would probably mean fewer updates, although, if we're honest, consistent updating is not really a strong point of this blog anyway. And which blog is Bobbins and Bustles? I feel like that's more fitting for a historical blog, but I've mostly been using it for modern sewing, so it's kind of confusing to move pretty much everything to a different blog and the people who do follow me on Bloglovin would probably be a might confused.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, I'm going to think on this for a while, but if you have an opinion, I'd love to hear it. And if not, well, consider this your warning if things get weird in here.</div>

I have another friend's wedding coming up in January (outdoors in the Canadian Rockies - BRRR!!), so I figured I would make myself an evening purse for that occasion.<br />
<br />
I went with Burda 8136 as it was in my stash from when I first started sewing and I bought every pattern I remotely liked from the bargain bin at Fabricland. I made view A, but added a strap, since I have a fear about losing a clutch purse as it can't be attached to me in some way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqHfj3bIfRNF1nvWbk_eGxLsd04jkxJygaXw5zx0NJxx1C9UJWRAOkVV4eNZFvRCgj7221sqhlCCNlobwtrvfSpB9hpj_1OeWOxBmj_WbK9wF6a55lqMg-hRpPHWBPq86AoP91Iukfl9c/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqHfj3bIfRNF1nvWbk_eGxLsd04jkxJygaXw5zx0NJxx1C9UJWRAOkVV4eNZFvRCgj7221sqhlCCNlobwtrvfSpB9hpj_1OeWOxBmj_WbK9wF6a55lqMg-hRpPHWBPq86AoP91Iukfl9c/s1600/007.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For this one, I used black taffeta from my stash that I think I originally bought at Fabricland to trim Simplicity 2512 in my early sewing years (3-4 years ago ???). This skirt eventually ended up in the bin due to some intense gathering drama and a poor fit. So now this taffeta goes on to be a purse! I used some white poly lining for a nice contrast (same as the lining of my A-line skirt). I interfaced the bag with some pretty light interfacing, since that's what I had on hand, but I now regret not using something more substantial to give the bag a bit more structure. It will work fine though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCDq7yzVaYL3EY7E30FovZyCYSUnBFaoRav_KUEGtx2PY5PMoQ-qXgWkRFQaA9OCTlXPBEf-vwugkl2M0uT_Ims4wqJrZLCIfbKHBW0b4R5loxQNmE5DBPO2lMAdr_jzYB5BKxE0BFjM/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiCDq7yzVaYL3EY7E30FovZyCYSUnBFaoRav_KUEGtx2PY5PMoQ-qXgWkRFQaA9OCTlXPBEf-vwugkl2M0uT_Ims4wqJrZLCIfbKHBW0b4R5loxQNmE5DBPO2lMAdr_jzYB5BKxE0BFjM/s1600/015.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As I mentioned, I wanted to add a strap to prevent me from losing my purse (as fancy events often mean alcohol for this girl). I was originally going to use some chain, but I couldn't find any I liked on my notions trip to Fabricland. So instead I got some kind of pleather trim that has plastic laced through it. I tested it a bit and figured it would be strong enough. After all, this is the kind of purse that holds keys, phone, ID, cash and lip gloss only. It's a bit of a contrast from the taffeta of the bag, but I think it works okay.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGuL_j5Hx67LCQCej_fjwJWFWg1VefVpQ5fdX4wsSD6CtayKBqPcxsNzxOUj0yFpfoM1s9tc31PH65gdV8YE4aSzscTb4MeABNKsw5WuJHdG0utqzCYG7yDKggKe-ZAvPxrGsJsZ-mTrk/s1600/019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGuL_j5Hx67LCQCej_fjwJWFWg1VefVpQ5fdX4wsSD6CtayKBqPcxsNzxOUj0yFpfoM1s9tc31PH65gdV8YE4aSzscTb4MeABNKsw5WuJHdG0utqzCYG7yDKggKe-ZAvPxrGsJsZ-mTrk/s1600/019.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was my first time in a while sewing with a Big 4 pattern and I found I kind of missed the hand-holding you get with lots of indie patterns. I'm still not sure if I did a couple parts right. For example, on the front part that is pleated, it had you baste the hem at the very start, then never said anything else about it. So I'm not sure if I was supposed to actually hem that or just leave it folded up. I just left it and so far it hasn't flipped out, so I guess that's good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-3Oe5G_zHSOCKai0niWIymJD4Bk16Q0mGZE6TBoV-8PbTWN1qWrhbKiyUNNWNx_4pFqFog52k9XPaD4Izws-0nN__mrKI8Q3Eiri7IC6BC9HmowyBHuZzbLrt8WI6_I3q5DwQVkqkYs8/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-3Oe5G_zHSOCKai0niWIymJD4Bk16Q0mGZE6TBoV-8PbTWN1qWrhbKiyUNNWNx_4pFqFog52k9XPaD4Izws-0nN__mrKI8Q3Eiri7IC6BC9HmowyBHuZzbLrt8WI6_I3q5DwQVkqkYs8/s1600/004.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Other than that, it was pretty simple to put together. It took me a couple tried to figure out have to tuck the zipper end to the inside, especially because I didn't leave myself much room to do it. I didn't like that there was no finishing on the end of the zipper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj6xKi08V8P5XdUdm3snbO02f_iM3KQDOqzKfAprJTsRxiqJr2_PvVmwvFVct3gR_-z1Qy2IXab2p9w45vQuceB1ZD0bomdzFptwrUTBcLtWnGpcPvDYEa74L2gUqMwrOeuPSr_jLGyF8/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj6xKi08V8P5XdUdm3snbO02f_iM3KQDOqzKfAprJTsRxiqJr2_PvVmwvFVct3gR_-z1Qy2IXab2p9w45vQuceB1ZD0bomdzFptwrUTBcLtWnGpcPvDYEa74L2gUqMwrOeuPSr_jLGyF8/s1600/002.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I can't see myself making this pattern again until my purse falls apart. I'm not crazy about any of the other designs, especially because I like a bit bigger purse for day-to-day. But I am looking forward to taking this one to my next fancy event.<br />

For fun, I decided to give it a try. The first round challenge was to make at A-line skirt. It's a bit different sewing something you are told to, since I almost only sew for myself and generally make whatever I want. It required a waistband, lining, zipper, closure and hem.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNc_8xORKUSpV25jR6_keRwpCZ-mzLpBWhXoRaebCWooxzwliJYgdOXs4ssTHPXlWdqZiZR4dXcA-OPx-mUxDAatZuBnABCxsrjdQcE7B2hvTJW6ZehMjJUWqunS449zkY6WO-WPc-avI/s1600/DSC_0032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNc_8xORKUSpV25jR6_keRwpCZ-mzLpBWhXoRaebCWooxzwliJYgdOXs4ssTHPXlWdqZiZR4dXcA-OPx-mUxDAatZuBnABCxsrjdQcE7B2hvTJW6ZehMjJUWqunS449zkY6WO-WPc-avI/s1600/DSC_0032.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I went through my patterns and the only thing I had that really fit the challenge was the A-line Variation of the Pencil Skirt found in <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/1584799919/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=390961&creativeASIN=1584799919&linkCode=as2&tag=meglikboo-20">Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing</a>.<img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-ca.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=meglikboo-20&l=as2&o=15&a=1584799919" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> Basically, I added 3 inches to the hem on both front and back, then re-drew the side seam lines to meet up with the original lines at the hip. I also omitted the back kick pleat. To make things a bit more interesting, I added some colour-blocking that matched the contrast waistband. Oh, and I added pockets, since I hate not having access to pockets. But more on that later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIInP_v_oSbJCas-tu7tyzNTZih0hiy3URZxmmDaa7zDe-KGQP956KCpoflqjnV7lwJeKVwGTJwLXjvIPyCPA3toGc4Zngj4EjW9TabfzTiVpLebTvu3RBjJ847caveoTFGp1h6g80uiY/s1600/DSC_0031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIInP_v_oSbJCas-tu7tyzNTZih0hiy3URZxmmDaa7zDe-KGQP956KCpoflqjnV7lwJeKVwGTJwLXjvIPyCPA3toGc4Zngj4EjW9TabfzTiVpLebTvu3RBjJ847caveoTFGp1h6g80uiY/s1600/DSC_0031.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this with two kinds of twill I had hanging around in my stash. The black twill came from Walmart s few years ago (2011?) back when the ones here still cut fabric. The grey is Galaxy twill from Fabricland last winter. It was pretty interesting to see the differences between these two twills. The biggest difference is that the black twill attracts cat hair like no one's business, while the grey does not. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs3M5RgKXB76uw6VRWgVESTrwBALN7O79j08JHoJNtbop3pCz8upSDLyTTTvCgmGzUnuJl-BIsdwz5FNcUj93GEe-UnvNG-ZwhyqDILmOfutt9RDC7yeNAFJhL5hs3UqphM0sleZ6GGd8/s1600/DSC_0027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs3M5RgKXB76uw6VRWgVESTrwBALN7O79j08JHoJNtbop3pCz8upSDLyTTTvCgmGzUnuJl-BIsdwz5FNcUj93GEe-UnvNG-ZwhyqDILmOfutt9RDC7yeNAFJhL5hs3UqphM0sleZ6GGd8/s1600/DSC_0027.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
When I did a test fitting on this skirt, it was really tight and the waist was REALLY high and I didn't find it comfortable at all. So I chopped 1.5 inches off the top of the skirt. I think it was a bit too much, as now it's a bit too loose (plus a bit of weight loss on my part I think). But it's pretty comfortable and I likely won't tuck my shirts in when I wear it. In fact, I'm not crazy about the shirt-tucked-in look I have in the photos, but I needed them in for the contest and wanted to show the waistband. Plus, I think it helped the proportions of the colour-blocking. Also, this skirt was really long! I think it's designed to hit somewhere below the knee, but I don't think that's a good look for me, so I hemmed it really deep to hit above my knee.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9A47-__g6tjR7MwVd4pouiPSfP5JTJgcfZdEOde3J668sk-BL6H_7vI94P4H7VuX3USb6OLve8HO1e_EvHN9aIG74w8bVsANOKFTYvbO6K-M2ELWaPtsX2b9iYPzz6Gkhjt9kFTavnTY/s1600/DSC_0025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9A47-__g6tjR7MwVd4pouiPSfP5JTJgcfZdEOde3J668sk-BL6H_7vI94P4H7VuX3USb6OLve8HO1e_EvHN9aIG74w8bVsANOKFTYvbO6K-M2ELWaPtsX2b9iYPzz6Gkhjt9kFTavnTY/s1600/DSC_0025.JPG" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, the pockets. I mess up on these and didn't realize until the skirt was pretty much finished. I drafted my own pocket bag because it is pretty simple when you have your brain working. But I completely forgot to add the seam allowance ! So these pockets are pretty darn snug. I can still cram my hands into them, so they will work, but it's a lot tougher than it should be. But look! My <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2014/11/crazy-cat-lady-sorbetto.html">crazy cat lady</a> fabric is back! Hooray!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSZqsgayAv2Zl-A85H3jkNQZVlA5iKwSSJvlcKJoQcOcYTzYq4UgkBw2qls9JSJs-ls7nMyqrTI9o6WpoxxR290qCH_mjdx0OUQP3oVz011zLvK9cJ_phW5mrQURkX1ltMYWbjIS0Uscc/s1600/DSC_0034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSZqsgayAv2Zl-A85H3jkNQZVlA5iKwSSJvlcKJoQcOcYTzYq4UgkBw2qls9JSJs-ls7nMyqrTI9o6WpoxxR290qCH_mjdx0OUQP3oVz011zLvK9cJ_phW5mrQURkX1ltMYWbjIS0Uscc/s1600/DSC_0034.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Overall, I think I have a very wearable, season-appropriate (yay!) skirt. It's not my favourite skirt ever, but I think I will wear it quite a bit with tights through winter. Unfortunately, I didn't qualify to move on in the competition, but I'm still pretty happy with how things turned out.<br />

So I emailed and we arranged to meet up and closed the deal!<br />
<br />
I'm pretty excited because I think I got a pretty awesome deal. Altogether, I got 30 magazines for $20! Here's the breakdown of what I got:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So a lot of stuff from the early-mid-2000's with a few older ones thrown in. I haven't had a chance to look through most of them yet, but I've already found a jacket I'm dying to make. So scary to think that the seller's boyfriend wanted to throw all of these into the recycling!<br />
<br />
In other sewing magazine news, has everyone heard about the new sewing magazine from Colette patterns: Seamwork? If you still haven't signed up for the preview, you can do so <a href="https://www.seamworkmag.com/?ref=megan2534">here</a>. You'll even be entered to win a subscription (and if you use my link, I will get a second entry).Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04383312222183625531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-84105623040517040682014-11-03T12:34:00.000-08:002014-11-03T12:34:33.756-08:00Crazy Cat Lady SorbettoWhen I heard about the <a href="http://www.misscrayolacreepy.com/2014/09/cat-lady-sewing-challenge.html">Cat Lady Sewing Challenge</a>, I knew it was something I had to do. Because I am ridiculous. I excitedly headed out to the local fabric store to see what I could find. The answer? Almost nothing. Nothing in the garment fabrics and only one cat pattern in the quilting section, which was all kinds of derpy. So what's an overly excited sewist to do? Buy it anyways!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/bobbinsandbustles/15701448391" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Cat Lady Sorbetto by Megan R, on Flickr"><img alt="Cat Lady Sorbetto" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8677/15701448391_1809dda07a.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
That's how I ended up with a length of beige fabric covered in half-derpy cats. And my one and only beige top. It's not a colour I usually wear, since it washes me out, but it's for a good reason. Behold, my crazy cat lady <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/sewing/sorbetto">Sorbetto</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/bobbinsandbustles/15518501750" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Cat Lady Sorbetto by Megan R, on Flickr"><img alt="Cat Lady Sorbetto" height="500" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3953/15518501750_179659663d.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This was my first time making my own bias tape, so that was a success in itself (minus the part where I burnt my finger on iron steam). As far as alternations, I lengthened the top by 2 inches, omitted the box pleat and shortened the shoulder straps in an attempt to stop the neckline and armholes from gaping.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/bobbinsandbustles/15083361514" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Cat Lady Sorbetto by Megan R, on Flickr"><img alt="Cat Lady Sorbetto" height="500" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/15083361514_8d6aa12f8c.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
And that's the biggest issue I had was once again a gaping neckline. I shortened the shoulder straps and it helped a bit. In fact, it looked not bad until I added the bias tape, which made it much worse. This is the same issue I had with my <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2013/04/sorbetto.html">first Sorbetto</a>, so I think I'm going to have to make a hollow chest adjustment if I make this pattern again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/bobbinsandbustles/15704936432" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Cat Lady Sorbetto by Megan R, on Flickr"><img alt="Cat Lady Sorbetto" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7568/15704936432_94a1b06712.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually ended up planning my entire Halloween costume around this top. Yep, I went as a crazy cat lady. Including hair rollers, fluffy pink bathrobe, slippers and a purse full of stuffed cats (stuffies, not taxidermy fyi). Unfortunately (?), no photos of the costume have surfaced yet, although I know they are hiding on a couple sd cards somewhere. If I find them, I'll add them to the post so you can see me in my crazy cat lady glory.Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04383312222183625531noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-71982450980271427542014-01-14T18:30:00.001-08:002014-01-14T18:30:45.828-08:00Megan Makes a Quilt (or two)As you may or may not know, besides this blog, I also run a book blog (Megan Likes Books, if you're interested). With that, I joined a group of fellow bloggers while I was living in Edmonton and we would meet up every month or so. One of them recently became a first time mom and another will be in just two weeks! Someone suggested we all make quilt squares based on our favourite childhood books and make them baby quilts. Everyone agreed this was a good idea and, since I'm the only one with a sewing machine, I volunteered to put them together.<br />
<br />
And this is where I learned a few things from my first time sewing with others.<br />
<br />
1. Don't expect everyone who initially agrees to follow through.<br />
<br />
Of the people who originally signed up, a few had to drop out due to time constraints. We were already short on squares to begin with, so this meant fewer personalized squares and more plain fabric squares.<br />
<br />
2. Be flexible.<br />
<br />
We agreed squares would be 6.5 x 6.5 inches. When the submitted squares arrived, some were cut a bit wonky, so lining things up was a bit difficult. One lady misread the instructions and her squares were quite a bit bigger. So I decided to be flexible and changed up my plans for the quilt to put her large squares in the center. They are the cute Beatrice Potter squares that she quilted to be kind of 3D, which is cool.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirsKRWco6MG1ghOI2_kutOJqJ_9dTCrncLc-m0rF-skjorUZ-u6MXwRzquiieV6zR9IJBMoBkF3RIVerz6lsd_LVzkxS7snuMiDLEXpctZM3Dq0w0GOCu3nB4MOaeO9ajm0EYcnCYG3ire/s1600/DSC_0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirsKRWco6MG1ghOI2_kutOJqJ_9dTCrncLc-m0rF-skjorUZ-u6MXwRzquiieV6zR9IJBMoBkF3RIVerz6lsd_LVzkxS7snuMiDLEXpctZM3Dq0w0GOCu3nB4MOaeO9ajm0EYcnCYG3ire/s400/DSC_0004.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
Once everyone's squares had arrived, I was feeling a bit of a time crunch, so I didn't make any personalized squares myself. I was also shocked how difficult it was to find bookish quilting fabric. I found hamburgers, but no books. I did find some Richard Scary fabric which I was loved and the little boys in the one fabric kind of reminded me of the boy from Where the Wild Things Are. The other two fabric are kind of generic baby.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpTJ6ngeAQheQcRj8Xjc92g2UcoDvjzrKuiGDEIGEPc346B0nXovzGeDOQY_htLSMe3kuIq6XtlLLlUOeNjqoCKuHkNerUZ42yGVq_B4j0KE_CHIXSRBUlkjqqPd8nRXwM-b_n00EP5GYs/s1600/DSC_0011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpTJ6ngeAQheQcRj8Xjc92g2UcoDvjzrKuiGDEIGEPc346B0nXovzGeDOQY_htLSMe3kuIq6XtlLLlUOeNjqoCKuHkNerUZ42yGVq_B4j0KE_CHIXSRBUlkjqqPd8nRXwM-b_n00EP5GYs/s400/DSC_0011.JPG" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Winnie the Pooh is actually cross-stitched!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The backing is a special baby fleece that I just thought was cute. The batting is some kind of natural fibre product in a package I bought because the store was packed and I didn't want to go back into the cutting table line (there was a huge sale going on). The edges are bound in extra-wide, double fold bias tape I originally bought to bind the insides of my Albion I'll be starting soon. But the ribbon I was originally going to use ended up not working out, so I made due.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEp28db5TAXSf0A8B_WJInQLwLu0LRE2EMzv9xL-DECwp1Qtq5ZbuxJhI4-P93ixJUpjPKjd8LEiKfUnigPx0oZfZOh0Ia-B3uqaxdm4XDzpqkhKcOTc0FUl5EqUJKpVm8qRp5vYmCFu7W/s1600/DSC_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEp28db5TAXSf0A8B_WJInQLwLu0LRE2EMzv9xL-DECwp1Qtq5ZbuxJhI4-P93ixJUpjPKjd8LEiKfUnigPx0oZfZOh0Ia-B3uqaxdm4XDzpqkhKcOTc0FUl5EqUJKpVm8qRp5vYmCFu7W/s400/DSC_0009.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
So this is my first time attempting a quilt of any kind. I think it turned out not too bad. Not everything lines up and the corners are a bit dodgy (on both, even though I tried a different method on each). It's not 100% square, as I found when I was folding it. Although it's nowhere near as bad as the angle of the photos makes it look. But I doubt the babies will care! And the mom's seemed to really like them!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFdBKiWg_rEzhaQ_JnEnAWIDHzcmPXrVxoQNcl4s0sFye87jj45OQjFA5CowQkifnlKUyrqHAbP-Bnza62NBQzWorC0S25U4qyIWd0MI-96eYDII2D-FDveWbzr0e60QDFqI8HLXl-EzD8/s1600/DSC_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFdBKiWg_rEzhaQ_JnEnAWIDHzcmPXrVxoQNcl4s0sFye87jj45OQjFA5CowQkifnlKUyrqHAbP-Bnza62NBQzWorC0S25U4qyIWd0MI-96eYDII2D-FDveWbzr0e60QDFqI8HLXl-EzD8/s400/DSC_0012.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Do you recognize any of your favourite childhood books in there? Besides the Richard Scary fabric I mentioned, there's also Peter Rabbit, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh and Harry Potter! <br />
<br />

And I did pretty well! I think I sewed 6 pieces from stash fabric, which is pretty darn good considering how sidetracked I got last year.<br />
<br />
And while sewing through my stash was great and I need to continue, this year I need to do a different kind of stashbusting: my pattern stash. Since beginning to sew, I've amassed a LOT of patterns. Indie patterns go on sale: I buy them. Big 4 patterns go on sale: I buy them (not-so-much lately as I've been feeling the indie stuff). While I doubt I can get through them all, my goal is to sew one previously never sewn pattern from my stash per month.<br />
<br />
Because I like to quantify stuff, here's the count of my unsewn pattern stash.<br />
<br />
Indie patterns: 5 (not including patterns from Gertie's book or the Colette book and not including freebies) - I will do all of these this year!<br />
<br />
Big 4 patterns: 25<br />
<br />
I also found 2 patterns that I totally bought in the wrong size. So if anyone skinnier than me wants <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v7848-products-26.php?page_id=940">this pattern</a> in 6-8-10 or <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8381-products-8332.php?page_id=942">this pattern</a> in 4-6-8-10, just <a href="mailto:meganlikesbooksblog@gmail.com">email me</a> and they are yours for the cost of shipping (1st come, 1st serve). I think credit for this year-end-round-up-thing belongs <a href="http://crafting-a-rainbow.tumblr.com/">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>Hits:</b><br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2013/12/stripe-y-cooper.html">Cooper bag</a> - You guys, I won my sewalong category! I am so excited! Plus I love this bag to bits. Unfortunately, it's currently in rehab due to insane fraying of the strap webbing, but it will be back out in action soon!<br />

<br />
2. <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2013/04/simplicity-2207-skirt-and-bustle.html">Simplicity 2207 skirt and bustle</a> - I've only won this once (it is a costume), but I was proud of it none-the-less.<br />

<br />
<b>Misses:</b><br />
<br />
1. Not sewing! The biggest miss by far was this summer, where moving was followed by a complete loss of sewing mojo. So many projects that have been pushed back.<br />
<br />
2. <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2013/11/sassy-librarian-blouse-aka-six-months.html">Sassy Librarian Blouse</a> - This one had major fit issues that I didn't bother fixing. That's what happens when you take 6 months to make one shirt.<br />

<br />
<br />

In 2014, I'm tackling knits and a coat! And some more costumes!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-23604336307110202202013-12-25T15:06:00.002-08:002013-12-25T15:06:32.119-08:00Thank you!I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to any and all of you who voted for me in the Colette Cooper Sewalong. I am SO honoured to have had my bag chosen as favourite backpack. There was some TOUGH competition and I had such a hard time choosing my favourites in each category. I think all the bags features could have been winners.<br />
<br />
Oh, and Merry Christmas! If Christmas is not your thing, then please translate my good wishes to a holiday of your choice. If you don't have a holiday, then hopefully you got a wonderful day or or are enjoying the stat holiday pay like me! Yep, I'm working a 12 hour shift today. Best wishes everyone and thanks again!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-40081706098239851812013-12-18T20:42:00.001-08:002013-12-18T20:42:10.930-08:00The Cooper Sewing Contest Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you know that the Colette Cooper Sewing Contest voting has started. I'm going to very shamelessly ask for you to vote for me (but only if you actually like my Cooper). I'm entry #9 under the Backpacks category. There are so many gorgeous bags, it was really hard to choose which ones to vote for. But I'd really appreciate any votes I can get. Thanks and good luck to all the other contestants!<br />

Cooper and Albion were my first ever purchases from Colette (I've since also bought Beignet). I haven't had time for Albion yet, but I did manage to make a Cooper during the Speedy Sewalong. And I love it!<br />

<br />
First, fabric choices! The sample bags on Colette's website are definitely masculine, with their rugged waxed canvas (which I love). Also, if I was comfortable using leather, that would look amazing. But I wanted to make a backpack for me and I do love me some brights. So I knew I wanted to use this red and white striped canvas from my stash. The pattern uses a main and a contrast fabric. None of the other fabric in my stash went well and it was snowy and I didn't want to drive to the fabric store (so lazy). Then I had the idea to use the same fabric from main and contrast and just switch the direction of the stripes by cutting the contrast pieces on the crossgrain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWfbscVJGvSmgDPbNmnNzugyui_7ICosB08lbXAsU7I31vxdunuJ58OG8jTEQ1nSU3WJaOV7rSdakvDbfpkz89YPEQpHi9Kpn4w-ImJJlnXx2-xJKm6kxgQajv7dIRChNbwKTxzsxa0fq/s1600/DSC_0019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWfbscVJGvSmgDPbNmnNzugyui_7ICosB08lbXAsU7I31vxdunuJ58OG8jTEQ1nSU3WJaOV7rSdakvDbfpkz89YPEQpHi9Kpn4w-ImJJlnXx2-xJKm6kxgQajv7dIRChNbwKTxzsxa0fq/s400/DSC_0019.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I love how the stripes turned out! It's so stripe-y! It actually totally reminds me of the early albums from the White Stripes, one of my favourite bands. There was some minor stripe matching required at the sides and on the long skinny pieces on the front, but that turned out to be easy peasey.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Can I just say I love canvas? It was so easy to work with! It just stays exactly where you tell it to be and does everything you want. There were a few issues with bulk when sewing through six layers of canvas, but overall, it was really awesome to work with. Not-so-much with the lining.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7pjFxjnM495sF1xSWz9floLzrbjttO4aO7084mOodFVN75ZKo3UXszCw-xhRNcp-W66-5UA0JDsHOQZRQ8akLEyhVVuYzclvqO3nCNK3N7zg-1FWsPSVwvqEiK13FUslaMCATXS25eMf/s1600/DSC_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7pjFxjnM495sF1xSWz9floLzrbjttO4aO7084mOodFVN75ZKo3UXszCw-xhRNcp-W66-5UA0JDsHOQZRQ8akLEyhVVuYzclvqO3nCNK3N7zg-1FWsPSVwvqEiK13FUslaMCATXS25eMf/s400/DSC_0012.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
For the lining I used periwinkle wickaway ribbed nylon ripstop. The good? I love the colour. It;s really pretty and I love the surprising pop of contrasting colour. I don't know if this bag could have handled more red or white or stripes on the inside. Other than the colour, this fabric got on my nerves. It wouldn't press AT ALL and it wanted to bunch and catch whenever it could. Plus it probably felt worse after the joys of sewing with canvas. Either way, I got it done and I love the end product.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2AbbUDzZHzi4DzryPllAa7j_Uf1RVFlO3HHMnBBvNNc8-j1i2BSHCXn4oiLH38X9uB4zvUCmTNLcT2FgJm1sYFr1JaPFgVITNpm-lTl5JOEw25zQXUYEXB8pzoFi82CT5tjnDBgx2sKOy/s1600/DSC_0010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2AbbUDzZHzi4DzryPllAa7j_Uf1RVFlO3HHMnBBvNNc8-j1i2BSHCXn4oiLH38X9uB4zvUCmTNLcT2FgJm1sYFr1JaPFgVITNpm-lTl5JOEw25zQXUYEXB8pzoFi82CT5tjnDBgx2sKOy/s400/DSC_0010.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I really debated making the straps out of the same fabric. But in the interests of time and my bf's discretion, I went with simple white webbing. I think it turned out nice, although I'm still wondering "what if".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBxKLq9AD0MvN9MPwZE7ihmO6n1W82dOekm4YQ1YOI3iFrr7DH6iqeI_n2rXnAI1XHpPzHixXLUr1GKlpUqsxjHlwtuulsEXmOxmVI6lLYaw4LhSb-ZB5EVN6JHCi2j1O0Kl_84557zWef/s1600/DSC_0007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBxKLq9AD0MvN9MPwZE7ihmO6n1W82dOekm4YQ1YOI3iFrr7DH6iqeI_n2rXnAI1XHpPzHixXLUr1GKlpUqsxjHlwtuulsEXmOxmVI6lLYaw4LhSb-ZB5EVN6JHCi2j1O0Kl_84557zWef/s400/DSC_0007.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually made a couple of minor mistakes on this one. The first is that I forgot to test my markings on the lining fabric and they didn't erase very well. I'm hoping they will rub off over time and either way, it's on the inside, where no one buy me (and now you) will know. Another minor lining issue is that I ran out of my thread for the lining when I was attaching the second pocket. And I was in a hurry and didn't want to make a trip to the store, so I just grabbed the next closest colour and kept going. Then I changed my mind on what colour was closest and switched again. So I have three colours of topstitching on the lining. Oh well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBZYSG9Iv2lLhRf2kS1fP5Zh1EBxJ1PLqU7Z3ozp0opDbyR2cKniiqCBdsO2VtQMKHDsuz1E4-zHW2rNd2BR5Wle22GyZMob9tQIBYFY6IXrFypoefFSvYmvLhxhd0u6N-KJE-3ajj2nnw/s1600/DSC_0022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBZYSG9Iv2lLhRf2kS1fP5Zh1EBxJ1PLqU7Z3ozp0opDbyR2cKniiqCBdsO2VtQMKHDsuz1E4-zHW2rNd2BR5Wle22GyZMob9tQIBYFY6IXrFypoefFSvYmvLhxhd0u6N-KJE-3ajj2nnw/s400/DSC_0022.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The other minor mistake I didn't even notice until I was looking at the other Cooper versions in the Colette Flickr group. I installed my rivets in the wrong spot! I guess I had the pattern piece upside down when I marked where the rivets should go. So my rivets are near where the flap attaches to the back, rather than near the edge of the flap. This one doesn't bother me at all because I actually like them where they are and I can always add more rivets later if I charge my mind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy_7FaX9cLmGgbpCSR9et7Di4aRZhDs0xFDA5TTa7OFN5314qp6D_NTPgUZsM087YTCXU2hBeZKngFwboCgc7iKQnlEp5UGJD-yW6B76O9iy4i4fWjSWcqD7ol3RHtKGG3-GIaf2tSvH1C/s1600/DSC_0023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy_7FaX9cLmGgbpCSR9et7Di4aRZhDs0xFDA5TTa7OFN5314qp6D_NTPgUZsM087YTCXU2hBeZKngFwboCgc7iKQnlEp5UGJD-yW6B76O9iy4i4fWjSWcqD7ol3RHtKGG3-GIaf2tSvH1C/s400/DSC_0023.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So overall, I love my Cooper backpack and definitely have plans to make a couple of the bicycle panniers for my Schwinn, despite the ridiculous about of top-stitching involved. Who knows, maybe the messenger bag as well. But I really liked this pattern. And no fitting! Yay!<br />

This is the first of three nerdy ornaments I plan to make before Christmas. The 2nd is underway, but having technical difficulties.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so when I came across <a href="http://tinyapartmentcrafts.blogspot.ca/2010/12/golden-snitch-ornament-tutorial.html">this</a> tutorial, I knew I had to give it a shot! And I think it turned out pretty good! A bit glue-y, but you don't notice when it's on the tree.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOQVPHv0IXeoZUt9llrko3TaoDY17u87SJ0JkPm75xk1daorBbGZ43VqKvXOn4ivyLZmMT9lPCfG0dz-pF8fWmB37bLNgt69uBc8a-iiSHrHOvgUTlKwLB5oz2UCIJAmvh5N8ZzonYe9FE/s1600/DSC_0228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOQVPHv0IXeoZUt9llrko3TaoDY17u87SJ0JkPm75xk1daorBbGZ43VqKvXOn4ivyLZmMT9lPCfG0dz-pF8fWmB37bLNgt69uBc8a-iiSHrHOvgUTlKwLB5oz2UCIJAmvh5N8ZzonYe9FE/s400/DSC_0228.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a few small changes to the tutorial, but followed the general idea. I made my wings a bit of a different shape. My Christmas ball also came pre-decorated with the gold glitter. I also splurged and bought sparkly gold tissue paper, then decorated it with swirls of glitter glue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XQZjzgQr2JWqv-kJNgL8liX3HExA714kd-KfoTK6AfbqZYN2i9SPqgZIhZYbenlWFuMmx7Lb0ekNDRQMLz1_Ec2NNzt3ovtPso1yY8CNwm9AHKMyeUNvmrdHq94cBsO25iw21sTt09Px/s1600/DSC_0227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XQZjzgQr2JWqv-kJNgL8liX3HExA714kd-KfoTK6AfbqZYN2i9SPqgZIhZYbenlWFuMmx7Lb0ekNDRQMLz1_Ec2NNzt3ovtPso1yY8CNwm9AHKMyeUNvmrdHq94cBsO25iw21sTt09Px/s400/DSC_0227.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The only major change I made was how to attach the wings. The tutorial cites this as troublesome and used so fancy glue (Farbi-Tac). Instead of going out to buy that, I had the idea to attach the wings with wire. So basically I made a little loop of wire around the neck of the ball, then twisted it into each wing. One wing was a bit droopy, so I secured it with some more hot glue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy103kZP_jTL5K4UM8CKOe_wVaV2tKn8s7kuX2TOsoZv40HXD7YihCCpEm_QgPG8ZsXq7DL1MNtbP2JQnfzY5OPDiohccJNVbeYv29HE1AyB4mXNuLp_hisxPPRU_qE5nP-tWrmuleyFWz/s1600/DSC_0226.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy103kZP_jTL5K4UM8CKOe_wVaV2tKn8s7kuX2TOsoZv40HXD7YihCCpEm_QgPG8ZsXq7DL1MNtbP2JQnfzY5OPDiohccJNVbeYv29HE1AyB4mXNuLp_hisxPPRU_qE5nP-tWrmuleyFWz/s400/DSC_0226.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And that's it! It's a relatively quick project. the longest part was definitely letting the glitter glue designs on the wings dry. Especially because they had to be done one side at a time. But I really love the end result and I have enough materials left to make one more, so I might do that as a gift.<br />
<br />
<br />

Yay! Unfortunately, I'm not super pleased with the results. This is partially due to the combination of my body type and the style of the pattern and partially due to a lack of communication between sixth-months-ago-Megan and now-Megan.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8TTu1jGKJWdnP8qjD4GYIEYEdeJKkLFP_O99rQODCc40QKYyH1YGqnxRQCzurvLdDug4EEC02-d4xWBvBdnIEivURHq8vgRTwS1L-SK3VJgaBt0i_fWmHPNi9dywsZqvdeAUj6Pxp7JMj/s1600/DSC_0196.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8TTu1jGKJWdnP8qjD4GYIEYEdeJKkLFP_O99rQODCc40QKYyH1YGqnxRQCzurvLdDug4EEC02-d4xWBvBdnIEivURHq8vgRTwS1L-SK3VJgaBt0i_fWmHPNi9dywsZqvdeAUj6Pxp7JMj/s400/DSC_0196.JPG" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Check out that crazy shoulder ripple!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
You see, I started this blouse a good six months ago, before moving. Then it got packed up and forgotten about until a couple weeks ago when my sewing inspiration returned and I decided to finish it (just in time for the bow neck blouse sewalong!). Unfortunately, there was clearly some differences in thinking between six-months-ago-Megan and now-Megan. This was meant to be a wearable muslin. However, six-months-ago-Megan decided to do all the neckline facings and finishing, but not try it on. I know right! Crazy girl. Although to cut her a little slack, the side seams are one of the last things you do on this pattern (before only hem and buttons). So when I tried this on a few weeks ago, the fit was terrible! I remember grading from a 10 for the bust to a 14 for the waist and hips. Yet when I tried it on, the fit through the top was big and the fit through the hips was very tight. So I let out the side seams as much as I could and also removed 2 of the back release pleats. Now the fit through the hips is good. I was lazy and decided not to fix the fit through the shoulders and bust. Mostly because it would result in a weird dart in the middle of the back and some shoulder darts that would really interfere with the tucks down the front.<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8c6Zm_MkFcNQ8CL7U3gFgwrTa5aixxSeX_fOIiYd5cm-yWEL07kN781rE16e75V2RTv170dE6IrE3JwXYaIORdB4CeBnN0UyZCXnR_cNok8ypbmWGt3oPlrhaNqOT-9tU4zH9ARrh65T6/s1600/DSC_0204.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8c6Zm_MkFcNQ8CL7U3gFgwrTa5aixxSeX_fOIiYd5cm-yWEL07kN781rE16e75V2RTv170dE6IrE3JwXYaIORdB4CeBnN0UyZCXnR_cNok8ypbmWGt3oPlrhaNqOT-9tU4zH9ARrh65T6/s400/DSC_0204.JPG" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some crazy blousey-ness on the one side</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Also, partly because I don't plan on making this again.Nothing against the pattern itself, since I've seen some really cute versions in the Craftsy gallery, but it really doesn't do anything for my body type. I prefer styles that have a bit more waist definition, while this pattern includes some release pleats that actually make it more blousey at the waist. Kind of the opposite. I'll still probably wear this top from time to time (or see how it fits my mom), but I don't plan to make another version. Although there's a good chance I will steal the cute little buttontab or collar from the other version to add to another pattern.<br />

A few details on this one. The main fabric is from my stash (whoo stashbusting!). I believe it's cotton but I've forgotten all other details. The trim is leftover from my <a href="http://bobbinsandbustles.blogspot.ca/2013/04/sorbetto.html">Sorbetto</a> tank. I love me some polka dots! Also, I wanted white buttons, but I needed 15mm shanked buttons and the only ones that Walmart had were these black ones and I did not feel like driving all the way to Fabricland for more buttons.<br />

<br />
Finally, a word on Craftsy platform and the class itself. I like the
level of interactiveness of Craftsy and Christine was a good teacher.
Sometimes it's so nice to actually see someone do a step rather than
read it three times and still scratching your head. My only complaint
was that there was no written instructions. More advanced sewists are
going to be totally bored watching Christine do every step in detail.
But if you skip ahead, there's a chance you'll miss something important.
For example, waiting 8 minutes while she does a 4 step buttonhole was
kind of a pain when your machine does a one-step. Other than that, I
really enjoyed it.<br />

I'm working my way through the <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/class/Sassy-Librarian-Blouse/74?_ct=iuqhsx-kdyluhiqb-huikbj-sekhiu&_ctp=74">Sassy Librarian Blouse</a> on Craftsy, instructed by Christine Haynes. The class requires or reccommends a few sewing tools I didn't have. One was this amazing <a href="http://fasturn.net/">fasturn</a> tool for turning your sewn tubes of fabric right side out in a flash. Seriously, check out this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4Qz06pVcMY">video</a>! Too bad it's too pricy for me when you factor in shipping. <br />
<br />
The second was a tailor's ham. In the past, I'd always just pressed darts like normal on a flat ironing board (I guess that's what you get for being mostly self taught). I looks all over for a tailor's ham, but they are extremely hard to find in my area. I looked online and saw I could order one from Joann's, but I hate paying shipping on a single item and I didn't need anything else at the time. So I decided to make my own!<br />
<br />
I looked at a few different tutorials and decided to go with <a href="http://sergerpepper.blogspot.it/2013/04/Sewing-Supplies-DIY-Pressing-Tools-Tailors-ham.html">this one by Serger Pepper</a>. The tutorial calls for one side of the ham to be covered in cotton and one to be covered in wool. I had lots of cotton scraps to choose from (I went with stars). However, I didn't have any wool scraps around and I didn't feel like running to the fabric store just for this project. So I found this wool skirt that had to lying in my mending pile for ages. It doesn't fit anymore anyway, so I decided to cut into it for my ham. Look at me upcycle AND stashbust on the same project!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The empty ham</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The tutorial was pretty straight forward, since it's basically a ham-shaped pillow. But that leads to the barn reference in the title. The tutorial calls for you to go out and buy a package of hamster bedding (wood shavings). Well, along with being a sewist, I'm also an equestrian! So last weekend when I went out to riding my horse (his name is Scarface, one of these days I'll post some pics of him), I also filled my ham with some clean shavings from the barn. Since, I didn't want to make a mess in the house/my bf's car, I sewed it up right there in the barn!<br />

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this project, although I think I underfilled it a touch, so I might go back and try to fill it a bit more. It was essentially free, since I already had all the supplies (or they were readily available), which is nice, since it would have cost me $18.29 to buy it from Joann's and have it shipped to Canada (the shipping was only $1 less than the cost of the ham). Now I can save my sewing budget for something fun (like maybe a pattern or two from <a href="http://www.deer-and-doe.fr/?lang=2">Deer and Doe</a>)!<br />
<br />
As well, I will admit that some sewing shenanigans also occurred while working on this one late at night.<br />

It was awesome. The drive was absolutely beautiful and I really enjoy visiting Seattle (Pike Place Market was so cool). We even got a chance to go kayaking, which I totally fell in love with. One other thing we made sure to do was go to a fabric store and look for a dressform. Since I had the bf in tow (he only has so much patience for fabric stores), I only ended up going to one major fabric superstore: Hancock's. For those of you with a Hancock's in your neighbourhood, this might not sound exciting at all, but prices for patterns (99 cents for McCall's) and the dressform were much better than here in Canada. So after a lot of thought on the matter, I decided to get the basic Sewperfect model by Dritz. It's pretty basic, but it was relatively inexpensive, so I won't feel bad when I need to upgrade in the future. Here she is (sorry the photo quality is a bit poor):<br />

It ended up taking a lot longer than expected, since the first place we were scheduled to move into didn't turn out and we ended up having to move again 3 weeks later. Yikes! But at least everything was still packed I guess.<br />
<br />
Anyway, we finally got moved in a couple weeks ago. There's still a few boxes to go (waiting for my mom to come visit with her SUV so I can get my bookshelves from IKEA). However, there is exciting news! We've gone from a one bedroom apartment to a two bedroom townhouse, which means a lot more space. And my wonderful boyfriend agreed to let me make the second bedroom into a sewing room. I am beyond happy about it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXum9b0FznFX8CU65BoJ8BQmARPoYCyyttVOQFYgNZz9X1w1EB7Rm-y6W7Iiwzr2BlVyzwsxtSoxzL44MmANPfsxt7A9ItqLhm9X1tjhL73PAFS41YKMbp0-T79zPOCWb9fkXgQwlacP8v/s1600/DSC07931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXum9b0FznFX8CU65BoJ8BQmARPoYCyyttVOQFYgNZz9X1w1EB7Rm-y6W7Iiwzr2BlVyzwsxtSoxzL44MmANPfsxt7A9ItqLhm9X1tjhL73PAFS41YKMbp0-T79zPOCWb9fkXgQwlacP8v/s400/DSC07931.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So I thought I share a couple pictures of my new space. It's still a disaster of boxes, but I've gotten my table, sewing machine and iron set up and have finally been able to do a bit of sewing in the past couple days. Working on my sassy librarian blouse (hopefully wearable) muslin. I'm new to the Craftsy platform, but so far I like it. It's a bit slower to watch the video compared to reading a pattern, but I enjoy being able to watch her techniques. Advanced sewers might get bored with explanations for beginners, but for where I am now it works great. Except I don't have enough plugins to plug in my laptop, so I can only sew for as long as the battery lasts. The bf said he will get me a powerbar though, then I can sew all night! Also, if you look closely in the closet, you can see my newest sewing toy, which I'll show off to all of you next week.<br />
<br />

<br />
Finally, I just wanted to mention that along with getting a new place to live, I also got a new job! It's exciting and nerve-wracking all at once (I haven't started at a new job since 2009). I'm going from being a student to working 9-5 through May, June and half of July to my new job, where I'll be working 12 hour shifts 7 days on/7 days off alternating days and nights. You guys! This means I get a week off every other week! There will be entire DAYS of sewing! I'm super excited. Here's hoping I can handle the night shift! My first day is Monday! Expecting a bit of a bittersweet last day at the old job tomorrow.<br />

It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for the 6 hours I spent trying to gather the damn skirt ruffle (more on that later)! Overall, I'm most happy with it and more than happy to have completed this project. In the end, I think it looked rather nice and, more importantly, it was finished in time to wear to Calgary Expo! Hooray!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4rhEWYfH5Pc1_aYFNJrXPqL3SuhRptKKPZb-MYxiLUF21orws9xfv7SI_buHYNFxIoN1g4xzmuHxAuvt-AL7GfyvLD3MYAZBkERnXD_QKhF_osJKLUuKQjcK1ByABDbicmkKqvbBKx6_u/s1600/DSC07766.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4rhEWYfH5Pc1_aYFNJrXPqL3SuhRptKKPZb-MYxiLUF21orws9xfv7SI_buHYNFxIoN1g4xzmuHxAuvt-AL7GfyvLD3MYAZBkERnXD_QKhF_osJKLUuKQjcK1ByABDbicmkKqvbBKx6_u/s400/DSC07766.JPG" title="Simplicty 2207" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As I mentioned, the skirt ruffle gave me a ton of grief. I used an old rayon thread that most likely came from my mom or aunt's stash and it snapped so easily, any time I gave it a little tug. Multiple that by the approximately 5-6 feet of ruffle I needed to gather and it was a bit of a nightmare. I'd finally get it mostly gathered and then it was still way bigger than the upper skirt. This was after fighting with it for hours, so I made the decision that it wasn't worth it and just cut out the remaining portion of the ruffle. Done! So the ruffle is a less gathered than it's meant to be, but I don't think it's a big deal. Also, the ruffle is not as evenly gathered as I'd like, but after 6 hours of broken threads, I didn't care anymore and I don't think it's too terrible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh89sjP6iQvoni7zQeLVrnRCvA4kYZRXjpncTtZxPGo1og_LqRxqbR9d4geltpBrqWfCgMNwvFC20JR4UxYSpeTKiT_Lr_ZSgxanIjJRyCMYKMYwJ0FYvPtCT3caPuXhnt_kW7fCCOn4uHd/s1600/DSC07767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh89sjP6iQvoni7zQeLVrnRCvA4kYZRXjpncTtZxPGo1og_LqRxqbR9d4geltpBrqWfCgMNwvFC20JR4UxYSpeTKiT_Lr_ZSgxanIjJRyCMYKMYwJ0FYvPtCT3caPuXhnt_kW7fCCOn4uHd/s400/DSC07767.JPG" title="Simplicty 2207" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I finished the skirt, I was not that enthusiastic about tackling the bustle. I had a time crunch (damn those deadlines) and there was a lot of gathering to be done on the bustle. Thankfully, I'd used up most of the old black thread and instead used some new stuff for gathering the bustle. Didn't break a single time. Thank goodness, or I'd probably have lost it.<br />

<br />
This project made me very happy to have Rosie the Janome in my life. Old Sally the Singer would have pitched a fit trying to cram the fabric and braid under the foot and it would have been messy and unpleasant. Rosie, however, sewed down the braid like a champ! She didn't even complain when one row of braid crossed another on the bustle. I love her so much!<br />
<br />

<br />
I didn't make any changes to the bustle pattern, but for the skirt I lengthened the ruffles (because I'm tall) and added a full lining. I like the length, I got pretty lucky there, since I didn't make a muslin or really try it on first. The lining is probably the ugliest thing I've made in a while. I tried to follow the upper skirt pattern, then somehow managed to make it smaller than the skirt. So I added in a piece to make it fit. Then I decided to put in the elastic at the back of the skirt before adding the lining, so then the lining ended up being too big and I had to remove a chunk of the part I had added in. It was a combination of not following the pattern (I didn't want a lining ruffle) and not being 100% there mentally. So, needless to say, it's ugly. But no one can see it anyway and I'm very glad I lined it, since I don't trust the taffeta to be non-see-through.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Another bustle-shot. Also, I know my corset is super loose, but I had to wear it all day and also like to be comfortable.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Like I said, I'm overall pretty happy with the result. The ruffle on the skirt could be a bit more even and the taffeta frays like mad, even on the edges I've finished, but other than that I'm happy. Would I make it again? Probably not. How many big ruffle skirts does a girl need?<br />

(Upgrade!)Well, I've gone and done it. Tuesday after my last final exam, my boyfriend and I went on a little trip to the local sewing machine store. I'd been considering getting a new machine for about a month and wanted to see if the local shop had any used ones on consignment. Well, they didn't, but what they did have was a sale on Janome machines. Janome was my brand of choice, since I've heard nothing but good things about them. So the boyfriend and I looked at a few machines and the saleswoman showed me two that were in my price range and one that was a bit above. I wasn't sure which one to get and when I asked my boyfriend, he really thought I should just get the more expensive one, since the salewoman was worried I would outgrow the less expensive machine (I'm sure sales commissions had nothing to do with it ;) ). When my boyfriend and I were sitting and discussing what I was going to do, I expressed my worries about spending more than I budgeted (and could really afford). So, he kindly offered to pay for half of it. How did I get so lucky as to find this wonderful man?! <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOMNuGM0_tJ_1FZ6ulUAEl6CzY7QX7sWv4p3qHyrpzIYmw8l1gwVTUKzgJWCQ2RS2K9pgGowrk1GzY3kSQ-jAv7ctoc_-hcdVSnP4z7MeYpXC2SLpbolWWfLTWrmWG4LvX1psbiuzh4gQG/s1600/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOMNuGM0_tJ_1FZ6ulUAEl6CzY7QX7sWv4p3qHyrpzIYmw8l1gwVTUKzgJWCQ2RS2K9pgGowrk1GzY3kSQ-jAv7ctoc_-hcdVSnP4z7MeYpXC2SLpbolWWfLTWrmWG4LvX1psbiuzh4gQG/s400/DSC_0001.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Meet Rosie!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So in the end I decided on the Janome 2030 QDC. According to the store it was 40% off, but I haven't really been able to verify the regular price, since no one every posts sewing machine prices online. Does anyone know why this is? It actually marketed as a quilting machine and came with a bunch of quilting feet I have no idea how to use and the extender table. I feel a little bit like I was talked into buying more of a machine than I really needed and spending a bit more than I should have (or at least having the boyfriend spend more than he should have). Spending money actually really stresses me out, but I rationalized it with working some overtime coming up if possible, since I start work again on Tuesday for the summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRFoK9u3SiCKRCVHfVwltGcPUqo3GNJJ4qSJnLAxdPANtpLY4GffSKZJbUuWLqG9tnVX6PbFbQC07qWZRqipnx8h1PBSFPbYUQtasUxgxytYUS744Q1k5jaMyg1_SKyomcpf-mjNmff3VI/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRFoK9u3SiCKRCVHfVwltGcPUqo3GNJJ4qSJnLAxdPANtpLY4GffSKZJbUuWLqG9tnVX6PbFbQC07qWZRqipnx8h1PBSFPbYUQtasUxgxytYUS744Q1k5jaMyg1_SKyomcpf-mjNmff3VI/s400/DSC_0002.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So anyway, meet Rosie! Despite my money-spending stress, I really am absolutely in love with her! Everything is so easy! There's so many upgrades between her and the old (older than me!) Singer of my mom's I've been using for the past few years. First of all, Rosie is computerized, which is pretty dang nifty. Second are the beautiful 1 step button holes she can make. I was always so stressed about button holes and avoided patterns that required them, but now I was to put them on everything! The third awesome thing is the speed control. My old machine had one speed and sometimes everything would get going too fast and turn out messy. But now I can set the speed to slow and make sure everything comes out neat, which makes me really happy. As well, Rosie can finish raw edges much nicer than the old Singer and she never complains when I ask her to sew through more than two layers of fabric. Also, the automatic threader is pretty nifty. I really feel like she does all the work and I just sit there watching!<br />

I've had Rosie for two days and I am still completely in love with her. Was it worth it for me to go with the more expensive computerized machine (the cheaper two had purely manual dials)? I'm not sure, I guess time will tell. But I can tell you that I am madly in love with Rosie and all of the very cool things she can do!<br />

Hey everyone! So I finally got around to photographing my finished Sorbetto during one of my study breaks. Enjoy the lovely balcony shots. In some of them you can even see the reflection of my gibbled tripod on a chair. Lovely!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I sewed this one as a break from the gathering-hell that my steampunk skirt has become. I think my thread is old and/or cheap because it breaks every 5 seconds. And I have METERS of fabric to gather. The pattern instructs to gather in 4 bunches, but I'm going to have to do it in about 20!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTN7H54fF5g4SJSNRX5ANb9SbqWz6E-Lf_R77mb_qS9kxWtTEmnc_AYobrX2__LE7HJ1crzFdYmRwqK8cI0Kh-T8G60aQjCld7AhB3Lk_Ip0V6KXLgIy8ach-lAmmaTmN4EdpEf1-wr2ch/s1600/DSC07733.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTN7H54fF5g4SJSNRX5ANb9SbqWz6E-Lf_R77mb_qS9kxWtTEmnc_AYobrX2__LE7HJ1crzFdYmRwqK8cI0Kh-T8G60aQjCld7AhB3Lk_Ip0V6KXLgIy8ach-lAmmaTmN4EdpEf1-wr2ch/s400/DSC07733.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Sorbetto was a bit of a breeze compared to that, so it was a proper break! Hooray!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBavi8i2ssge7QKVxncj1nFAOAKUhNzheEazOvjhYp3RzpISaAPSTXi-gSkn4Efqs3UV-K9Nt7tZKuiFEvK_pkocLZvy3ijv2liO89fYLSxoLqB4xyrBfcFR72xjuY-8RddTBuJ_ozzf3/s1600/DSC07734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxBavi8i2ssge7QKVxncj1nFAOAKUhNzheEazOvjhYp3RzpISaAPSTXi-gSkn4Efqs3UV-K9Nt7tZKuiFEvK_pkocLZvy3ijv2liO89fYLSxoLqB4xyrBfcFR72xjuY-8RddTBuJ_ozzf3/s400/DSC07734.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
That's not to say it went ahead without issue! First, I misread the pattern and for whatever reason, I thought I was supposed to finish the hem with bias binding tape. Apparently you're not, but by then I'd already cut the fabric and didn't have room to hem it normally without making it too short. And that's after I already lengthened in a bit! This is my first Colette pattern, but do they tend to run short a lot?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMed6sf6xS3QM1cf3_63TkQ-5fIhaTrXYx3SWxAf3yFNTCAt2N3czEudnDYGkw4aFm5LQBOfGaXWaL9hrKS_xkDICytCo8-yFGBfs_v4s3kOff_mUE_FXuMCIFD1-jFQyt8ReoaCDtRW1A/s1600/DSC07737.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMed6sf6xS3QM1cf3_63TkQ-5fIhaTrXYx3SWxAf3yFNTCAt2N3czEudnDYGkw4aFm5LQBOfGaXWaL9hrKS_xkDICytCo8-yFGBfs_v4s3kOff_mUE_FXuMCIFD1-jFQyt8ReoaCDtRW1A/s400/DSC07737.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
My second issue were the darts. Somehow, when I was transferring the marking, they ended up being in two completely spots! I left the higher one and moved the other one so they're symmetrical.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrjhaRgXR3D3bUPqRx9jZEJ1g_srDwHfqsH1JPbmO8pQSyRc4J-Lf66UURQw98GyL7nhhelGBGntkjk2kicGgsM5Nv23SpxB0N-PejDOYize4GAgv3ny49n7imeddakpWZQJVdCZT7fdav/s1600/DSC07738.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrjhaRgXR3D3bUPqRx9jZEJ1g_srDwHfqsH1JPbmO8pQSyRc4J-Lf66UURQw98GyL7nhhelGBGntkjk2kicGgsM5Nv23SpxB0N-PejDOYize4GAgv3ny49n7imeddakpWZQJVdCZT7fdav/s400/DSC07738.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final issue was the fit. Apparently I was blind/rushed/lazy/dumb when I was fitting and didn't notice the gaping at the neck while checking the fit. So after binding the edges, it now has some serious gape issues at the neck. This problem is common for me in off-the-rack clothing, so I think it has to do with my body shape. Narrow shoulders and a possibly hollow chest are my main culprits. By the time I noticed (as I was preparing to take these pictures), I didn't feel up to fixing it. Maybe later. But I'll wear it anyway. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicP03Ye_qn54HqjWtGB4rYcJmL8cYQGdnquDI8Kx8sz77E4D9RJkNquBAS7gkOwjXkM-TX7Vu9F3N4ficwIMSQyvmVZYlOIE4KYJ_w8_BcxDuqJaFwEQor2GRAxKgHhDC2lObg2Os1zXyN/s1600/DSC07745.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicP03Ye_qn54HqjWtGB4rYcJmL8cYQGdnquDI8Kx8sz77E4D9RJkNquBAS7gkOwjXkM-TX7Vu9F3N4ficwIMSQyvmVZYlOIE4KYJ_w8_BcxDuqJaFwEQor2GRAxKgHhDC2lObg2Os1zXyN/s400/DSC07745.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I graded the pattern 2 sizes between the bust and the waist and it ended up a touch boxy, but I don't mind. I think it works for the style of the top.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqlvQTKTz85pABB4HlF4aCGnaVePBLO2GG0JjvSOk9FOutdhLk3MFum-NnWv6vyC9fFO3y2nYh1PLm-TfvrWkSmW-geCaL7ZhesZqW5YB7D9NRVdSmSnbuZ90w_3uzIdBXbpMxCL2C9a-R/s1600/DSC07746.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqlvQTKTz85pABB4HlF4aCGnaVePBLO2GG0JjvSOk9FOutdhLk3MFum-NnWv6vyC9fFO3y2nYh1PLm-TfvrWkSmW-geCaL7ZhesZqW5YB7D9NRVdSmSnbuZ90w_3uzIdBXbpMxCL2C9a-R/s400/DSC07746.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I just had to include this picture because I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. Between my super awkward arms and the totally bizarre expression on my face, this one is definitely a share-worthy derp.</td></tr>

<br />
This one also counts towards the Stashbusting Challenge, since I
actually can't remember when I got this fabric. I still have a bit left
to figure out what to do with.<br />

I made the tank top view of Simplicity 2865 (far right of the envelope).<br />

This was one of the first times I've tried sewing with a stretch fabric (after hearing many horror stories). In the beginning, I had no problems at all! Everything was going perfectly until it came to the neckline binding. Somehow, I kept getting catching the fabric and making little folds along the neckline. And picking out stitches is where I began to hate stretch. Finally, on my third time picking out the stitches, it happened. I managed to rip a sizeable hole near the neckline of the top in a very obvious spot in the front. Oops! Luckily, I was able to reshape the neckline to make it a bit lower and wider and hide the hole. I was worried this would make it too low-cut, but I think it's alright. Plus, I can always add another tank under it. The rest went by with no real issues, except for that I realized I sewed the placket a bit crooked. However, I don't think it's super noticable and after the fiasco of picking out the neckline binding stitches so many times and making a hole, I decided it wasn't worth it and left it alone. The hem is also in need of pressing, but it's going into the wash anyway, so I'll do it later.<br />

Overall, I liked the pattern and am planning making one of the dresses at some point. Probably the left neckline with the center length. Plus, everything for this one (fabric and buttons) came from my stash, so hooray for stashbusting!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2946524645747191731.post-68130299634041592642013-01-23T17:01:00.001-08:002013-01-23T17:01:52.567-08:00(Mostly) Completed: Victorian reticuleI started and completed my first project in ages last night. Since I've been out of sewing for over a year (yikes!), I wanted to start off with something easy, which kind of ironically, didn't involve a pattern. I'm planning to make a steampunk style costume soon (fabric is ordered!), so I did a little research and decided to put together a simple reticule (Victorian purse). It was super simple and didn't take long at all (as long as you don't count the weird tension issues I got halfway through). It's mostly completed, although I didn't finish the openings, haven't decided how I want to finish the ends of the strings and I'm thinking of adding a gold tassel to the bottom. However, this was mainly a test run, since I don't think it will match the colour of the taffeta I ordered for my dress.<br />

As a bonus, this little project also totally fit with the Stashbuster Sewalong theme of January! The fabric I used was the leftovers from when my aunt made some throw pillows. There wasn't much more than you can see in the bag (just the part that was cut away when I made the point at the bottom).<br />

Here's a little about me. I'm 24 years old and currently a student. I used to sew a fair bit until a little over a year ago, when I stopped (it may have had something to do with starting my book blog, <a href="http://megantalksbooks.blogspot.ca/">Megan Likes Books</a>). I've decided to come back to it now, partly to pursue something I've always been intrigued by: cosplay. I'm a (not-so) closet geek and I've always wanted to dress up and go to conventions and the like, but I've always been too chicken. But not anymore! I'm planning to create an awesome steampunk costume inspired by a book I read recently: <a href="http://megantalksbooks.blogspot.ca/2013/01/review-etiquette-and-espionage.html">Etiquette & Espionage</a> by Gail Carriger. While looking up some local conventions, I saw that she is actually coming to my city (hopefully, but not yet confirmed) in November to <a href="http://www.purespec.org/">Pure Spec</a>. I'm so excited and totally want to dress up in steampunk as one of her characters. And we'll see how motivated (and rusty) I am, I may even put something together for <a href="http://www.calgaryexpo.com/">Calgary Expo</a>.<br />
<br />
But this blog isn't just about costume! I also want to make some more clothing to wear for everyday. So there will be lots of that as well.<br />
<br />
So I want to start this blog off with a challenge: The 2013 Stashbusting Sewalong hosted by <a href="http://cationdesigns.blogspot.ca/2013/01/announcing-stashbusting-sewalong.html">Cation Designs</a> and <a href="http://tumbleweedsinthewind.blogspot.ca/p/stashbusting-challenge.html">EmSewCrazy</a>!<br />

<br />
I'm pledging to use up at least 6 pieces of fabric from my stash by the end of the year and . And guess what? I was so inspired by this challenge, that I've already done my first one! I was playing around with trying to make a reticule (Victorian purse/bag), so I'll be prepared when I make one for my steampunk costume (it's really mostly Victorian). I'll hopefully have a chance to take some pictures tomorrow and post them up. It's been my first time sewing in ages, so I spent so long deciding what to make that would completely fail due to my skills being rusty. Plus it fits with the January theme of using up those last bits of fabric from another project. I'll likely post up my stash photos sometime this week.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
